    What is Sattu?

    Published
Sattu is a traditional Indian flour made by grinding roasted grains, most commonly roasted Bengal gram or chana. It has been a part of Indian food traditions for generations and is especially popular in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and parts of Madhya Pradesh.

Unlike ordinary raw flour, sattu is made from roasted ingredients. This gives it a distinctive roasted aroma, nutty taste and a naturally satisfying texture.

Sattu can be mixed with water to make a refreshing drink, used as a filling for parathas and litti, or added to different recipes.

    What is Sattu Made From?

Traditional chana sattu is made from roasted Bengal gram, also known as kala chana. The roasted chana is ground into a fine flour.

Depending on the regional recipe, sattu can also be made using other roasted grains or pulses. However, chana sattu remains one of the most widely consumed varieties.

    How is Sattu Used?

There are many ways to enjoy sattu:

    Sattu sharbat
    Sattu paratha
    Litti chokha
    Sattu roti
    Sattu stuffing
    Sattu smoothies
    Sattu-based snacks

Its versatility is one of the reasons sattu continues to be popular in Indian households.

Is Sattu the Same as Besan?

No. Sattu and besan are different products.

Besan is generally made by grinding raw Bengal gram or chana dal, while traditional chana sattu is prepared using roasted chana before grinding. This roasting gives sattu its characteristic flavour and aroma.

    How Should You Eat Sattu?

Sattu can be mixed with water, salt and spices for a savoury drink or combined with jaggery and water for a sweet version. It can also be used as a filling in traditional recipes such as paratha and litti.

Sattu is a simple, versatile ingredient that connects traditional Indian food with everyday convenience.
